Researchers find possible link between Alzheimer’s and Diabetes
Researchers in the US have found a possible genetic link between Diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
Previous research has found that people who have diabetes also have a much higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Research in worms has now found that the link may be due to a mutated gene which is already known to play a part in the development of Alzheimer’s.
The researchers looked at a gene in the worms which is similar to one known to play a part in the development of Alzheimer’s in humans. They found that the gene is also involved in the insulin pathway.
The insulin pathway is involved with a number of metabolic processes as well as the processing of insulin, and one of them is helping to keep the nervous system healthy.
The researchers believe the human gene may be the link between Alzheimer’s and Diabetes and have called for more research to confirm their suspicions.
A mutation of the suspected gene is responsible for processing amyloid protein in humans with Alzheimer’s. The protein is found in damaged areas of the patient’s brain.
A spokesperson for the journal, Genetics, said: “We know there’s a link between Alzheimer’s and diabetes, but until now it was somewhat of a mystery. This finding could open new doors for treating and preventing the disease.”
Other experts have welcomed the findings of the study, but warn that the research may not give the same results in humans than in worms.
